Visiting Alabama and Florida October 2018

The October trip to Alabama Gulf Shores and Orange Beach was a great trip.  The trip was the last full week of October 2018.    We drove from St. Louis to Memphis, Tennessee for lunch at the “One and Only BBQ”.   We had eaten there last year on our way to Vicksburg.   The food is awesome, and this time it did not disappoint.    We went from Memphis to Meridian Mississippi to spend the night.  The motel we stayed was just off I-20 on Hwy 19.  There was a number of places to eat nearby including a Chick-fil-a which is our favorite.  There was even a Sams club next to the motel where I was able to buy gas for the Edge at a lower price.   We continued on down through Mobile and saw the battleship Alabama.  There are a number of attractions at the park.  We did not stop on this trip but we will in the future.  We checked into the motel and went for a walk on the beach.  The sand on Orange beach is very soft and tougher to walk than many other beaches I’ve been.  But it was nice to walk on the beach and listen to the surf.DSC01852

On Monday morning we went to the west end of the peninsula to Fort Morgan Historic Site.  We walked around through the fort and the small museum there.  If you go be careful.  If you walk in the grass around the outside of the fort there are squadrons of mosquitoes.  Take insect repellant.

Later that day we caught up with an old friend and his wife who live in the area.  We had lunch at the Original Oyster House.  It’s been a while since we caught up.  It was good to see them.

On Tuesday the weather was overcast with the threat of rain.   We were considering going back to Mobile to see the Battleship Alabama but my friend suggested going to Pensacola Naval Airstation to the Museum instead.  It was a great suggestion.   The Museum there was great.  Note that if you go there, the Museum is on the Naval Airstation post, so you need to go in the ‘back gate’ off Blue Angel Parkway.   You will be checked at the guard station so don’t take anything in your car that you’re not supposed to.   If you like aircraft like me, the museum is awesome!   My friend is 100% right.

We were very lucky the day we were there.  The weather stayed dry and the Blue Angels practiced that day.    Check out the video I put together of the air show.

One more item on Gulf Shores.   On Sunday night we had dinner at  Lucy Buffett’s LuLu’s.   The food was good and the atmosphere was entertaining.  But my friend noted that Lulu’s gets very busy during the ‘season’ so you need reservations or you won’t be able to eat there.  We went in the offseason on a Sunday night and got a table right away.

The Lord willing I’ll definitely go back to Gulf Shores in the next couple years.  I want to look around Mobile and tour the USS Alabama.
